Friends Provident takeover reports raise FTSE

The FTSE fell 0.35%, or 22.6 points, to 6454.3p following news that Friends Provident may go up for sale. The provider rose 1.26%, or two points, to 161p.

Persimmon rose 1.25%, or 10 points, to 811p. British Energy Group rose 1.21%, or 6.5 points, to 542p. BHP Billiton fell 1.92%, or 30 points, to 1531p following reports that it may not raise its bid for Rio Tinto. Rio Tinto fell 1.55%, or 83 points, to 5287p. The Dow Jones rose 0.05%, or 6.26 points, to 13365.87c. Exxon Mobil rose 1.42%, or 1.33 points, to 95c. AT&T rose 1%, or 0.42 points, to 42.44c. General Motors fell 1.92%, or 0.76 points, to 25.3c.
