In London, markets recovered from yesterday's turmoil, with the FTSE 100 adding 191.4 points (3.54%) to 5,605.8.
Schroders NV saw the biggest gains, up 80 points (10.92%) to 812.5p, while Man Group added 43.5 points (8.95%) to 529.5p.
Lloyds TSB Group saw the only major loss, down 13.25 points (3.33%) to 384.5p, while Yell Group dropped a minor 0.6 points (0.41%) to 146.4p.
On Wall Street, markets saw a significant gain as Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers revealed better than expected results and the Dow Jones jumped 250.59 points (2.09%) to 12,222.84.
General Motors shares climbed as the firm confirmed it did not expect and fallout from its ties to Bear Stearns, up 1.14 (6.39%) to 18.97/ AIG added 2.34 (5.88%) to 42.14 and Alcoa recovered from yesterday’s losses, gaining 2.17 (5.85%) to 39.27.
No Dow Jones shares had made a loss in early trading.
