The FTSE fell 53.1 points, or 0.9%, to 5856.9p as Vedanta Resources led the losers. The metals miner fell 82 points, or 4.06%, to 1940p.
Alliance & Leicester followed, falling 23.5 points, or 3.91%, to 577.5p. British Energy Group rose 21 points, or 4.29%, to 510p, despite reporting an 18% drop in fiscal third-quarter profit. Experian rose 10.25 points, or 2.35%, to 445.75p. The Dow Jones rose 133.4 points, or 1.09%, to 12373.41c as American International Group rose 1.4 points, or 3.13%, to 46.14c. Boeing rose 2.43 points, or 3%, to 83.56c despite expecting to deliver 15 fewer planes to India this year than previously.
