The FTSE 100's struggles continues until close on Friday, the index dropping 68.4p, or 1.08%, to 6291.2.
Alliance & Leicester, down 41p to 607p and Kingfisher, down 9.5p, or 5.19%, to 173.6p had particularly poor days. The fightback was led by Vedanta Resources, up 77p, or 3.88%, to £20.60, 3i Group, up 25p to £10.44 and Scottish & Southern Energy, up 35 points, or 2.2%, to £16.25. In the US, the Dow Jones climbed 47.47 points, or 0.36%, to 13157.52. Hewlett Packard was the day’s top winner, climbing 0.95 points to 49.85.
