PM rules out compulsory pensions before next election

Prime minister Tony Blair has ruled out the introduction of compulsory pension contributions before the next election.

Speaking during prime minister’s question time in the House of Commons yesterday, Blair told MPs public approval would be required if compulsory contributions were recommended by the Pensions Commission, which is currently looking for solutions to the existing UK pensions crisis. Responding to a question from David Laws, the Liberal Democrat spokesman for work and pensions, Blair said the government would bring forward proposals once the Turner Commission had submitted its report in the Autumn.
