The FTSE 100 index closed in the positive this afternoon. The UK benchmark reached 4583.4 points, up 18.9 points up today.
WPP Group, the world's second-largest advertising company, increased third-quarter revenue by 3.8% as clients, including HSBC, and Microsoft increased spending. The company increased its shares by 16p to 539.50p.
Mining firm Anglo American is up as much as 36p today to £12.32, while HBOS was also a good performer up 18p to 730p.
William Hill is a big loser, dropping 13p to 480.5p.
BP also lost 6.5p to 531p despite a third quarter profit rise of 53%, because of record crude prices and an increase in its forecast for 2005 capital spending.
In the US this afternoon, stocks on the Dow Jones have opened well, trading up about 98.4 points to 9848.73 points.
McDonalds and General Motors have started well trading up $0.43 to $28.81 and $0.51 to $37.55 respectively.IFAonline
