The FTSE closed at 6239.7p this afternoon after falling 124.2 points, or 1.95%.

Reed Elsevier rose seven points, or 1.16%, to 608.5p. Reckitt Benckiser rose 18 points, or 0.65%, to 2776p. Northern Rock plummeted 183.25 points, or 28.68%, to 455.75p. Barratt Developments fell 75 points, or 8.62%, to 795.5p. Alliance & Leicester fell 75.5 points, or 8.05%, to 862p. Persimmon fell 80 points, or 7.35%, to 1008p. Shire fell 91 points, or 7.3%, to 1155p. The Dow Jones fell 21.46 points, or 0.16%, to 13403.42c today. Alcoa rose 0.64 points, or 1.84%, to 35.06c. United Technologies rose 0.88 points, or 1.17%, to 75.9c. Exxon Mobil rose 0.63 points, or 0.71%, to 89.25...
