In London, a late market rally was not enough to prevent an overall fall and the FTSE 100 dropped 19.6 points, or 0.3%, to 6,466.8.

Lonmin shares made the biggest gains, up 251 points, or 7.39%, to £36.49, followed by Yell Group, up 11.25 points, or 2.69%, to 429p. Smith & Nephew gained 15 points, or 2.58%, to 597.5p, Royal & Sun Alliance added 3.7 points, or 2.45%, to 154.5p, and Intercontinental Hotels jumped 22.5 points, or 2.37%, to 970.5p. Tate & Lyle share suffered after the release of a profits warning, down 155 points, or 27.8%, to 402.5p.
