Skandia is enhancing the Best Doctors service on its critical illness plan.
It means existing and new policyholders now have access to a number of free services.
Policyholders can now seek a second opinion from a panel of leading specialists following the initial diagnosis once a critical illness claim is accepted. The panel's recommendations include identifying the most appropriate doctor to treat the illness.
Claimants and their families are now offered a step-by-step hand-holding service. This involves Best Doctors assisting with booking travel arrangements, including meeting patients at airports if they're travelling far to hospital, and also arranges accommodation for families if needed. They also co-ordinate medical appointments, pre-admission arrangements and are available to take patient enquiries 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Multilingual services are also available.
In the US, Best Doctors will now source the best-priced quality drugs for patients where possible.
This critical illness cover, which gives claimants free access to Best Doctors, is featured in Skandia's menu-based protection product Skandia Protect. Skandia describes Best Doctors as an independent service offering patients a database of the most appropriate medical specialists in the UK and abroad to deal with their illness.
Skandia Protect is available at www.skandiaprotect.com. The site is part of Skandia's IFA extranet and available to all IFAs registered for the service.
