The FTSE 100 index closed down 18.40 points at 4,131.20 today. Concerns about levels of trading in the supermarket sector helped Tesco lead the losers with a 8.75p drop to 218p. Shell suffered a big drop of 12.5p to 391p as investors continued to make plain their objective of forcing the company to give back more money through a share buy-back programme. Alliance & Leicester's good remortgaging figures helped it to a 39p rise to 866p. The FTSE 250 index climbed 5.6 points to 5,230.5.
