Queercompany.com, the website dedicated to serving the gay and lesbian community, is to launch the first ever travel insurance package for people with HIV later this week.
The policy is unique in that it does not discriminate against those with HIV allowing them to take out travel insurance identical to that available to people with other medical conditions such as diabetes.
A typical two year policy administered by Card Protection Plan under the brand name Travel Assist and underwritten by UK Insurance would provide cover for hazardous sports such as skiing and against lost property. To date no other travel insurance provider has provided cover against injury or theft for people with HIV.
Queercompany spokeswoman Wanda Goldwag said: "Queercompany is proud to be the first online or offline business to be offering totally non-discriminatory travel insurance. It has been an uphill battle to find a company brave enough to take on this challenge to the insurance industry and we are delighted that Travel Assist has risen to that challenge.
"Queer people face discrimination in so many areas of life that we have to fight using our economic power where necessary. We are now calling on all insurance companies to recognise the areas in which they discriminate, and not only match the non-discriminatory nature of this travel insurance policy, but also to offer life insurance that benefits all users, regardless of their sexuality or HIV status."
As well as information and advice about the gay community and its lifestyle, Queercompany.com has a financial services section within its portal tailored specifically to providing financial products for gay people.
