Northern Trust is setting up a Dublin-based Oeic as part of its plans to expand its multi-manager service into the UK and Europe.
In October 2001 Northern Trust signed its first European distribution deal, a E125m multi-manager tie-up with Italian banking group Mediolanum, and is looking to sign further deals in the coming year.
The company, which up to now has targeted UK pension funds, claims to be the second biggest UK multi-manager provider, but Tony Earnshaw, managing director of multi-manager products, said it sees Europe as the real growth area.
The company is also hoping to announce a number of distribution deals with life offices in the UK and is talking to a number of interested parties. Earnshaw said it is setting up a Dublin based Oeic for this purpose, as this would give it access to the widest number of European markets.
Northern Trust looks style diversification and low correlation between managers as key elements for constructing multi-manager portfolios.
