Rupert Della-Porta has joined F&C as head of US equities, after leaving Aberdeen Asset Management, where he had the same role, in September last year.
The appointment follows a review and restructuring of the group's entire US investment process by chief investment officer Tony Broccardo.
Accordingly F&C is bringing together its US and global desks to try and better exploit its equity research capabilities. Atul Patel, head of global equities, will be responsible for the combined teams.
As a result of the restructuring, Bart Noordman, US fund manager is returning to the US desk at F&C Netherlands and Graeme Glen, also a fund manager on the US desk, is leaving the group. This follows the departure of Liz Rae, former head of US equities last September.
F&C currently manages about 10% of its total equity assets in US and global products and Broccardo said it is looking to grow institutional assets in this product area.
He added that given US equities represent around 60% of global equity fund benchmarks, this is a logical move for F&C.
At Aberdeen, Della-Porta managed the group's AA rated North American fund and prior to this he was at Hill Samuel as investment director, North American equities.
