The gloves are off in the debate over with-profits policies after Clerical Medical today accused "other providers" of continuing to promote opaque schemes that do not meet the needs of today's consumers or answer the proposals put forward by the FSA to deal with the issue of returns highlighted in the past year.
Clerical says that its response to the FSA's review of the sector is to promote transparency ahead of "past performance, price or financial strength" in order to give consumers a better deal.
It also argues that its with-profits bonds structures are more consistent with what consumers expect such products to be.
IFAonline was still seeking clarification as of yesterday afternoon from Clerical Medical as to exactly who these "other providers" are that are alleged to be confusing consumers looking for a straight-up deal from a with-profits provider.
