Gartmore is expanding into the Italian market and is opening an office in Milan with appointment of Nic Meotti as Country Manager.
Meotti will be responsible for developing Gartmore's business with Italian institutional investors, commercial banks, private bankers and other bancassurance distributors.
At present, bancassurers are the greatest source of financial advice to Italian consumers, however, independent intermediaries are gaining ground, according to a report published last month on the Italian market by research house Cerulli Associates.
Operating as an investment management boutique, the focus of Gartmore's Italian business will be based on offering a few of its existing range of investment management products, which will differentiate upon investment style and risk return profile, as well as those from other fund managers which are included in its product wrappers.
Gartmore is actively recruiting a team to support Nic Meotti, who is known to be an experienced and knowledgeable member of Milan's asset management industry. He joins Gartmore from ING Investment Management where he had been head of the Institutional Clients Division since 1998, responsible for managing the institutional client sales unit, marketing, new product development, and sales to a target audience of Italian and international banks, brokers, insurance and fund companies.
During his career he was also Sales & Marketing Manager for Deutsche Bank from 1995-1998, Sales and Product Manager for JP Morgan from1992-1995 and European Management Associate at Citibank between Milan and London from 1989 to 1992.
"This is a great opportunity for me to start up a new business venture for Gartmore in Milan.
"At the moment the Italian market is very interested in the products of specialist investment managers who can really add value through their investment management process and highly successful product diversification," says Meotti.
"There is an abundance of opportunities for a company that has a strong reputation as a high quality investment management company. Gartmore's positive brand presents the Italian team with a good base on which to build our business."
