Stock market volatility throughout the year saw UK pension funds posting negative returns, according to estimates from performance consultants the WM Company. The estimates indicate a -1.8% return for 2000 against a 21.3% gain posted for 1999. Peter Warrington, WM executive director said pension funds had managed a return of around 14% per annum but exceptionally high volatility had taken its toll on 1999 highs.
