The Gartmore European Selected Opportunities Fund was launched in September 1984 and aims to achieve the highest possible capital growth from an actively managed portfolio of investments.
Roger Guy took over management of the Fund in 1993, and has had an exceptional track record since being at the reins. Not only is he rated an AA Fund Manager by CityWire Funds insider over three years**, but he has won the Fund Manager of the year award in 1998 and 1999. And at a time when several high profile European Funds are losing their experienced, well-trusted managers, Gartmore feels that offering consistent high quality solutions through Roger Guy and his team is an incredibly valued asset.
Roger is backed by a highly regarded, award winning European Equities team who are the real driving force behind the Fund. The team manage over £6.7bn of Funds as at 30/09/02, and comprises fourteen portfolio constructors who have had an average of twelve years of industry experience between them, and seven years at Gartmore.
Eighteen dedicated global and European research analysts in turn support them. This web of investment professionals has gained the coveted 2002 Global Investor Award for excellence in European Equities for their achievements.
With a meticulous philosophy, a long-standing star fund manger and a dedicated and professional investment team, it is no wonder that the Fund has maintained consistent long-term performance, and has been awarded a number of accolades:
• 1st Quartile over the past 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10 years*
• 36% outperformance of the peer group over the past 5 years*
• 1st over 10 years in the Europe (ex UK) sector - Standard & Poor's 2002 Awards
• Maximum AAA rated by Standard & Poor's Fund Management
• Maximum AAA rated by Forsyth OBSR
• **** Rated by Standard & Poor's Fund Stars
• **** Rated by Morningstar
• Consistent outperformance of the Standard & Poor's Europe (ex UK) sector average
The graph on this page highlights relative performance of the Fund vs. the sector average over five years. Clearly this shows the European Selected opportunities fund has performed exceptionally well over the long term.
Roger Guy comments about the strategy behind his Fund, "We have 50% of the fund that we invest for the long term, and we've got a lot of analysts that spend a lot of time seeing the companies, doing the research and we get a very well chosen list of core stocks that we choose for the long term"
"I think with the short-term in Europe, there's 3000 or 4000 companies you can choose from, and there should be 2 or 3 companies that you could find in a given week or month that can really add some value in the short term"
And for the future, "We've had a couple of good years in what have been relatively difficult markets. I think we are now at levels that we can build off, and hopefully get some decent returns over the next 2 or 3 years" Currently the Fund is offering a 2% discount off the initial charge on lump-sum investments until 31/12/01
