Total liquid savings balances in the UK have risen to their highest ever level of almost £626bn, according to Halifax. A major stimulus behind the upsurge in liquid savings has been the rise in popularity of cash Isas. Between December 2000 and May 2001, cash Isa balances rose from £20.1bn to £42.3bn, according to the bank.
