Campbell is launching its first long/short equities hedge fund. The group currently manages more than $2.4bn in client assets using systematic, computer-driven strategies to trade globally diversified portfolios of derivatives and currencies.
Campbell's long/short equities portfolio will be offered through a master/feeder fund structure. The initial feeder will be Campbell Long/Short Equity Fund Limited, a Nassau-based hedge fund available only to non-US investors.
Campbell's strategy has been developed over the past three years and contains elements of both statistical arbitrage and relative value strategies. A large pool of qualifying equities are progressively filtered and sampled by an array of valuation criteria from which long and short trading portfolios are ultimately selected.
Bruce Cleland, president and CEO of Campbell, said: 'This strategy maintains a predetermined level of risk and we will use leverage whenever necessary to achieve that level of risk.
'However, in the first five months of 2001, market volatility has given us everything we needed without the use of any leverage at all. While we will continue to place primary emphasis on the management of our existing portfolios, we are very excited about the opportunities we see in equities.'
Meanwhile, Parker Global Strategies has hired five new staff across its risk management, research and marketing departments.
Mark Smith has been appointed vice president of risk management and Antonia Xixis has been named vice president, director of operations. Smith was previously at Deutsche Bank Private Bank and SAC Capital. Xixis joins from Arthur Andersen.
Thomas Murray joins the firm as vice president of research. Most recently, Murray was a vice president in the alternative investment strategies area of Citigroup.
Constance Doyle has also joined as vice president of marketing and Brant Behr has become senior associate of strategic initiatives.
Doyle joins from JH Whitney, where she was a vice president in the client service, partners group.
Prior to joining Parker Global, Behr was a research analyst at Kenmar where he was involved in hedge fund and CTA manager due diligence.
