Michael Hughes has been appointed chief investment officer at Baring Asset Management (BAM) with immediate effect. He succeeds David Brennan who has been acting CIO, combining this role with that of chief executive officer of the investment division. Hughes joined BAM in April 1998 from BZW Barclays, where he had been the group economic adviser. Since then at BAM he has been head of the UK & Europe investment management team and a member of the strategic policy group.
Michael Manning has taken extended leave from Dresdner RCM Global Investors to take a PhD in economics. He is part of the group's bonds team and specialises in gilts.
David Scott has resigned as chief investment officer of Mercury Asset Management's global private client's team. He is set to join Singer & Friedlander Investment Management as a director.
Simon Mellish has been named head of US equities at Gartmore. In his new role Mellish will work on developing the relationship with the group's American partner Villanova Capital. He will also be taking over the management of the Gartmore American Growth fund from Robert Siddles, who is leaving the company.
Williams de Broe has appointed Chris Legg as head of IFA sales following its decision to launch an investment trust portfolio service for IFAs. Legg was previously in a similar role at BFS. Alistair Mundy is to leave Morley Fund Management where he worked as UK equity income manager to join Investec Asset Management in the next few weeks.
Mundy will work alongside Chris Burvill, head of UK equity income, with whom he used to work at CGU in the early 1990s. Morley said Mundy's equity income responsibilities will be taken on by Norwich Union's Scott McKenzie, who is joining Morley as part of the merger of CGU and Norwich Union.
Alan Harding, formerly at Bradford & Bingley, has been named IFA field sales manager at Tunbridge Wells Equitable Friendly Society. Jill Lewis-Ranwell also joins the group as product manager for savings and investments. She was previously at Lloyds TSB.
Barclays Global Investors has recruited two new regional sales managers. Paul Hastings joins from Scottish Provident and will cover the South West of England. Russell Fryer joins from Scottish Widows Investment Management to cover the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Simon Chalk has been appointed area sales manager for the North and Scotland at Exeter Fund Managers. Chalk, previously an investment account manager at Scottish Amicable, will now be taking over from Mike Griffin who is retiring after 39 years in the industry.
Chris Rathbone has been promoted from London area sales manager at Cater Allen Bank to senior relationship manager. Rathbone will develop new business areas and cover marketing and public relations.
Andrew Drake has been recruited as head of client management and services at Gensec International Asset Management, reporting to chief executive Wallace Wormley. Drake joins the group from Towers Perrin, where he spent six years as an asset consultant.
