Award recognises excellence in both team and individual performance
The shortlist for the outstanding achievement award at the 2002 Investment Week Investment Trust awards has been finalised.
The award seeks to recognise a contribution of excellence from an individual or team within the investment trust industry.
The shortlist recognises individuals and teams from a number of different areas within the industry, including investment trust fund management, legal innovation, industry representation, trust boards and industry analysis.
The team at Aberforth UK Smaller Companies is included in the shortlist for its strong fund management and shareholder communications track record. The judging panel felt the team represented the best of old-style, professional and reliable approach to fund management.
The AITC's Daniel Godfrey has also been included in the shortlist, having provided the public face of the investment trust industry in what has been one of the most difficult years it has ever faced.
Godfrey managed to draw the industry together around the much-debated Its campaign and has not shied away from tackling the split-capital trust issue.
John Walton is recognised in the shortlist for fund management excellence as manager of the British Empire Securities trust. His long-term track record in the international generalist sector is seen by the judging panel as worthy of note.
Lawyer Nigel Farr of Herbert Smith is included for his work in reconstructing split-capital trusts, while the high quality of the investment trust analysis of Chris Brown of Cazenove merited his inclusion.
The board of the Edinburgh Investment Trust is also included in the shortlist in a year in which it took the momentous decision to move the giant international generalist trust from Edinburgh Fund Managers to Fidelity. Not only has the way in which the trust is managed changed but charges have been significantly reduced.
The awards ceremony will take place on the evening of 20 November and is preceded by an afternoon forum on investment trusts to be held at the UBS Conference Centre. Speakers at the event include Jeremy Tique, manager of the F&C Investment Trust, and Andrew Watkins of Jupiter.
