In this week's video interview for Professional Adviser's Investment Influencers series, where we chat to the most respected individuals who select funds, decide ratings or otherwise influence the allocation of investor fund flows, we hear from Mattioli Woods investment managers Ben Wattam and Ian Goodchild.
Together the pair head up the firm's investment management team, who are responsible for investment research and portfolio management. Wattam graduated in economics with geography from Loughborough University and has worked in investment management since joining Mattioli Woods in 2004. A Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst, he regularly presents at client seminars on a wide range of investment and economic topics.
According to Goodchild, his aspirations to work in finance started at a young age - while his younger brother was pushing toy cars and lorries around, he had parked his car outside ‘the bank' and was ‘working'. Having always been interested in wealth and financial provision therefore, he studied financial services at university.
In his 15 years' experience in finance, Goodchild worked in accountancy and as a financial adviser before becoming an investment manager with Atkinson Bolton Consulting in 2006 and setting up its discretionary portfolio management service in 2007. He joined Mattioli Woods when it bought Atkinson Bolton in 2013.
The Investment Influencers series, which has most recently featured Enrique Pardo of Allfunds Bank, Jon Beckett of Scottish Widows and Kelly Prior and Paul Green of BMO Global Asset Management, offers insights into how key players in the asset management sector see the world of investing and expect to deal with such challenges as greater market volatility, increased regulation and a growing trend towards short-termism.
