A Chinese proverb reads: Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still. A sentiment wholly applicable to the country's current economic fortunes. The Chinese economy grew by 7.7% in 2013, the latest figures from the country have revealed, its slowest rate for 14 years, matching 2012's reading and far lower than the 9.3% it saw in 2011. But behind the headline rate, the reasons for the slowing GDP are a key part of the story of an evolving China.
